This book makes me feel like a total sissy! I ride my pedi-cab in 12-degree weather for a few hours and feel like i'm going to die, then write about how rough it was. Well, try riding your bike 350 miles through Alaska’s winter!
Ghost Trail was written, published and edited by Jill Homer. Jill writes about her first attempt at the Iditarod trail race. If you’re like me, you know about the sled dog race, but apparently, once a year people ride/run the trail. Jill set the book up so one chapter is about the race and the next is about a significant event that kind of helped bring her to her current point on the Iditarod trail.
It reads very well and I was into it the whole time. (I'm having flash backs of writing 7th grade book reports... see kids- you don’t think you'll ever use the stuff they teach in real life, then someday you own a clothing company, writing reviews of books on your web site!)
I would call this book inspiring because it helped to push me to ride on days that I didn’t want to. Reading about Jill walking ten hours in -10 degree weather pushing her 60 pounds of bike and gear because the trail is unrideable really puts in perspective my half mile ride in 10 degree weather to buy snacks at the store. The book also made me feel better because I felt Jill and I had something in common. Throughout the book she talks about how she needs to eat but her body just can't- I’m the same way when I tour or pedi-cab- its really hard for me to eat and it was cool to hear someone else have the same problem. I could go on and on about this book- just buy it. It will inspire you to get out there and overcome whatever obstacle is in your way.
