Bellwether was kind enough to send along a couple products for us to check out. They sent us this shirt and a rain jacket- Brandon got everything, but sent this my way. He knew I was looking for a base layer to wear under my bibs, so he hooked me up with the sleeveless base layer.
My bib straps rub on my shoulders and its uncomfortable. I have seen pro riders with there bibs on and shirts underneath and always wanted one. I finally got a good chance to test this out over last weekend.
I got hired to pedicab the Chicago Marathon with a camera crew on my cab so they could follow a runner. I knew bike sorts and chamois cream were a must for 4 hours and 26 miles in the saddle! The temp was going to be in the mid 40s, so I had to layer and getting moisture away from the skin was very important or I would end up being cold.
The base layer fit perfect under my bibs and while I didn’t look as sexy as the model they use (sorry- so did we!), it served its purpose very well- it stopped my straps from tearing up my shoulders. I wore this, a short sleeve wool jersey, a long sleeve lycra jersey, and my jacket. Eventually I got too hot and then it was just the long sleeve jersey.
The runner we were following ran the first ten miles, so I was working hard to keep up and had a good sweat going. After ten miles he began to slow down and eventually walking. The base layer wicked away the moisture, so when we slowed down and I cooled off I didn’t freeze. I was comfortable as could be.
I haven’t had a chance to try this out in some serious heat because…well Chicago weather has been crap this year, but when I do I'll make sure and get back into this review and let you know how it did. I'm sure it will be great, but I'll let you know.
I say if you're looking for something for under your bibs, or just a good base layer, this is a great shirt!
