I've been wanting to test a set of these for awhile now, and it's my lucky month!
Michigan is the birthplace of One Less Car. The MC5 were from Michigan too. Iggy...a bunch of things that I think we can all agree rock. Col. Potter from MASH was born here too...so was I- so was Cole, and Derek too. The list goes on & on...Michigan is a special place. Is it just a coincidence Aerospokes are made in Michigan? I don't think so, but that's another story altogether.
If you've been following our blog, you probably know that the lock ring wrench (that will go unnamed) I borrowed didn't hold up long enough to unscrew my lock ring, forcing a spoke to go into my finger, and also making me a dick- sometimes I don't have the best of luck... I don't know why I've been waiting until I could put them both on to start checking them out- the least I could do is rock the front wheel- and rock it I have been!
I cut the extra length off my speedometer, so I can't prove if I was going faster, but it felt like it! Maybe it was the adrenaline from the glee of riding one. Then there's the cool factor- I definitely felt a bit cooler right away, and will probably have a big head for a bit once I get the rear one on- which I hope is soon!!!
Even rocking just the front made me feel like I did when I got that first (and only) pair of Jordan's Nike put out way back when and showing up for school (i think third or fourth grade) the next day with fresh kicks! You know the ones- The red, black, and white ones...the originals. They look dope as all hell- the wheels (the Jordan's did too)...but you already know that- on both accounts. If you rode mag wheels at all on your bmx bike back in the day- or today even (Aerospoke makes all sizes- including 20"), you know what I'm talking about. If not, consider the price tuition and go back to school!
They're a little heavier than I expected- heavier than the Traitor wheels with tires- but they're worth their weight in gold. So far, tough as nails. I promised Derek that I'd bomb some stuff here & there and so far everything is holding up great. Straight as an arrow, and super rad.
The hubs are smooth, ninja quiet, and instead of 15mm nuts, they stay on with hex bolts...a little different from the norm and pretty rad- they do the job and grip the fork tight. Aerospoke wheels only work with Aerospoke hubs, and come in a variety of styles.
Aerospoke builds their wheels fresh then sends them to the paint shop for a hot coat of your favorite flavor, so expect a delivery time of 3-4 weeks.
There's a lot of argument on the interweb about Aerospokes- some people think they're for fashion, and yup- they look cool as hell- covered that. Some think they're faster, some think they're slower because of the weight (which I don't agree with)... Personally, I had mag wheels back in the day on my bmx bike, and they were tough as hell- for me, that's the bottom line. I guarantee that if you try them and don't like 'em, there will be someone waiting to knock down your door for them- you won't have to worry about that.
